THE SIGN JOURNAL · PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Plan the wall before the sign.

Direct mounting, raceways and backer panels solve different problems. Here is what to discuss before fabrication.

Direct mounting

Individual letters attach to the building surface. This can leave an uncluttered composition with the wall visible between characters. The fixing positions and any cable routes must be planned for each letter, and they need to suit the wall construction.

A wall photograph cannot establish structural suitability. Ask the installer what information or survey is needed, who specifies the fixings and how exterior penetrations will be sealed.

Raceway mounting

A raceway is an enclosure behind the letters that can house wiring and components. It can be useful where a landlord prefers a shared mounting assembly or where electrical access needs consolidating. Its colour, size and visibility become part of the finished design.

A raceway does not make every wall suitable or remove all penetrations. Confirm the actual fixing layout and component access rather than assuming it is a universal installation shortcut.

Backer panels

A panel creates a consistent background for the letters and can help establish contrast on a busy surface. It also changes the overall sign area and composition. For a halo design, the panel surface influences how reflected light looks.

Confirm panel material, finish, edge treatment and overall dimensions. Lettering dimensions in a design tool may exclude the panel, so keep those measurements separate in the final drawing.

Plan the work around your building

Share cladding details, available electrical supply, installation height and access restrictions with the supplier. Say whether there is a canopy, a public sidewalk or another obstacle. Ask who arranges any necessary access equipment and who coordinates the electrical connection.

Do not approve fabrication while the mounting arrangement is unresolved. A change from direct mounting to a panel or raceway can affect proportions, wiring and cost.

Before opening day

Set aside time for the proof, site checks, permissions, fabrication, delivery and installation. Confirm the sequence with the businesses doing the work. A promised production time may start only after drawings and payment are approved.

Read the Canadian planning guide for questions to take to your local authority and landlord. Requirements depend on the location and project.
