THE SIGN JOURNAL · PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

What affects the cost of channel letters?

The useful question is what is included. Here is how to compare fabrication, lighting, delivery and installation on the same basis.

Start with one clear scope

A fabricated sign price and an installed sign price describe different things. Ask every supplier to quote the same artwork, overall size, lighting type and mounting method. State the installation address and whether you need the supplier to arrange the installation.

This site does not publish a universal per-letter price. Letter count leaves out the size, complexity and construction of each character. A large illuminated logo and a small unlit wordmark can require very different work.

What changes fabrication cost

Size affects material use, internal structure and shipping. Fine strokes, small counters and complex logos may require more design work or a different construction. Metal finish, face material, return depth and lighting arrangement also change the scope.

A halo build, a trimless face and dual lighting each add specific construction decisions. Ask for an itemised comparison when considering an upgrade so you can judge the actual difference for your design.

The costs around the letters

Installation may involve a site survey, landlord drawings, permissions, electrical work, fixing systems, access equipment and making good the wall. Delivery may require protective crating. Taxes and any applicable customs charges should be stated clearly in the supplier’s offer.

Check whether the power supplies, mounting template, wiring instructions and hardware are included. Ask who is responsible for electrical connection and whether the proposed mounting price assumes a particular wall condition.

Compare value over time

Ask what the written warranty covers and who pays for access or labour if something needs attention. Confirm how lighting components can be serviced and where replacements come from. Request cleaning guidance suited to the actual finish.

The cheapest initial offer may exclude work that another quote includes. Keep a comparison sheet with matching rows for fabrication, freight, installation, electrical work, permissions and aftercare.

Send a better brief

Include outlined artwork, a wall photo, approximate dimensions, the city, your opening date and your preferred lighting. State what you do not yet know. A supplier can then identify the questions that need a survey instead of pricing around an assumption.

Our quote checklist is a useful starting point. The studio lets you add a visual preview and a specification file.
